Welcome to Michael District Commissioners' website. Here you can see our latest news, find information about who we are and what services we provide, and read minutes and other documents from our public board meetings. Our Chairman and Vice-Chairman are appointed annually for each municipal year, which runs from 1st May to 30th April.

Members of the public are welcome to observe all meetings from the public gallery at the Commissioners Offices. The business of the Commissioners is dealt with by the board members as a whole, sitting once per month. Meetings are conducted in two parts, the first of which is open to the public. Meeting are generally held on the first Wednesday of the month but can be adjourned.

Rates

Local authorities are funded through a system of domestic and commercial rates. Individual properties are assessed and given a rateable value which forms the basis of the charges levied by the local authority, Manx Utilities, the burial authority and any other authority funded by the levy of a rate.

The rate year runs from 1st April to the 31st March and local authorities are required to set a rate for the forthcoming rate year no later than the 31st January. Michael District Commissioners’ rates are collected by the Isle of Man Treasury, which issues a combined rates bill to every property.

Rates are due and payable on the 1st April each year and, where full payment is made before the 30th June, a discount of 5% may be claimed.
